Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities have many beneficial effects. They build character and self-esteem,reinforce a sense of ethics and social responsibility, widen the student’ssocial circle, increase patience and resilience in the face of challenges,encourage students to take commitments seriously, motivate students to managetheir time more effectively by setting priorities, and provide opportunitiesfor students to contribute positively to the community and to people inneed.
Studentsin Business School participate in various extracurricular activities. Examplesinclude:
(1) Student Clubs. Students in Business School have avariety of choices when it comes to clubs that serve an educational function.Student clubs are based on subjects relating to economics and managementdisciplines and fully integrate professional characteristics with socialnetworking. Clubs affiliated with the School are listed in Table 1.

(2) CommunityBuilding Projects. Business Schoolstudents are actively engaged in many community building projects as anextracurricular activity. Community examples include: Dinghai Road Community; YanjiNo. 3 Neighborhood Settlement; Senior Citizen Association of Jiangpu StreetAdministration Office; Changbai Neighborhood Settlement; Pingliang NeighborhoodSettlement; Neighborhood Settlement of Kongjiang Road Street AdministrationOffice; Changyang Xinyuan Residence’s Committee of Daqiao Street AdministrationOffice; Yanji No. 4 Neighborhood Settlement; Yanji Xincun No.1 NeighborhoodSettlement
Through communityservice projects, students learn how helping others helps them by increasingtheir awareness of social issues and local organization, widening their socialcircle and making contacts that are beneficial to their future careerdevelopment. Following are some of theactivities in which students engage: Aged in Wheelchair Visiting USST;Armyand the citizen interaction in Yangpu District; Extending regards to Sunshine Homes;Micro-class; Arts and crafts classes; Paper arts classes; Inheritance oftraditional culture; Afternoon care classes; Youth activities; Free Englishlessons.
(3) PovertyAlleviation Initiatives and Volunteer Teaching. Students in BusinessSchool participate in extracurricular activities that help and support isolatedareas. Since 2007, undergraduates from the School have participated publicprograms that assist Guizhou, Shaanxi, Jiangxi, and other provinces.
(4) Thematic Studies.In2016, thematic studies in Business School took the form of project-basededucation, seminars, theme lectures, experience-sharing sessions, academicsalons, and on-site visits. The School also offers scientific ethics educationfocusing on a whole-person approach that motivates student engagement andinspires individuals to exemplify ethics internally as well as externally. The School’s efforts in this regard have produced positive results. The project, ‘Walking with Scientific Ethics’ is agood example, one of the sub-projects, ‘Advisors in Students’ Opinions,’participated in a writing competition and received the Excellent Project Awardfor building Shanghai scientific ethics and learning culture.
(5) ScientificInnovation Activities.Students in Business School excel intechnical, organizational, financial, and commercial activities that lead tothe implementation of scientific or entrepreneurial innovations. Their effortshave been widely recognized. In the China College Students EntrepreneurshipCompetition in 2016, students from Business School won one Silver prize in theentrepreneurship plan competition, two Bronze prizes in the entrepreneurialpractice challenge competition, and one Bronze prize in competitionspecifically for MBA students. In the Shanghai College StudentsEntrepreneurship Competition, students from Business School won one Silverprize and two Bronze prizes in the entrepreneurship plan competition, oneBronze prize in entrepreneurial practice challenge competition, one Silverprize in creative practice competition, and one Bronze prize in socialentrepreneurship competition. In all, students from Business School have wonmore than 110 awards in various Shanghai and national competitions.
(6) SummerSocial Practice. In summer vacation, theSchool organize students to participate in diverse social practice. The Schoolhelps students to disseminate information about their social practice throughits official website, micro- magazine, microblogging, and regular briefings.There were 26 summer social practice teams in 2014; 35 in 2015; and 29 in 2016.Summer social practice helps students to gain a better understanding of Chinesesociety and to apply what they have learned to the practice of writing surveyreports. Over the years, Business School has achieved one of the best recordsfor implementing summer social practice. In 2014, the School won 3rdprize in the Shanghai College Students Social Practice Competition and receivedone Excellent Award. In 2015, the Schoolwon 2nd prize in the Shanghai competition. In 2016, the School wonGrand Prize in the Shanghai competition.
(7) VolunteerActivities.Business School’s threefold mission islinked to its commitment to the kind of excellence that ensures thatinnovation runs through all the work.’ This commitment extends to all ofits volunteer activities. These activities are carefully crafted to embody thehighest professional characteristics and to exemplify leading-edge knowledge ineconomics and management. Through its high-caliber volunteer activities, theSchool extends professional knowledge to the community and the larger society.
The School regularly organizes volunteers to participate in all kinds of large-scaleevents, such as the Shanghai World Expo, the Special Olympics, the 2012 WorldSwimming Championships, the 2015 WorldSkating Championships, the 2016 Financial Innovation and Development Forum, theATP Masters Tournament, the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-BuildingMeasures in Asia, the Masters Tournament, the Shanghai session of the G20Meeting, and the International TechnicalTrade Fair, etc.
