Business School Held Lecture on Scientific Ethics and Scientific Research Initiation Graduate Student of 2019

Updated:2019-09-11

On September 4, the Business School held a lecture on Scientific Ethics and Scientific Research Initiation for graduate students in the first conference room of the school. Professor Zhang Yongqing, Vice Dean of the Business School, was invited to share the speech of “sticking to scientific ethics and building a fine style of study” for the 2019 Ph.D. and Master’s students.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Zhang Yongqing, Vice Dean of the university, introduced the topic of the lecture, which included the following four aspects: scientific ethics and style of study, academic misconduct, harm and causes, and what we should do. He pointed out that in terms of scientific ethics and style of study, scientific research should be carried out on the basis of honesty and trustworthiness, because scientific research is a process of pursuing truth, exploring truth, revealing truth, revealing truth and defending truth. Although there have been cases of academic misconduct in many countries, such as fraud and plagiarism in scientific research, but we still have to maintain a good academic atmosphere, academic attitude, academic spirit, academic norms and academic standards, which is the bottom line of scientific research must be adhered to. From the case of South Korea’s “Father of cloning” Hwang Woo-suk, the case of a Shanghai University professor “chip” fraud, the case of a Shanghai Research Institute where Dr. Huang surnamed falsified experimental data, as well as cases including “toxic milk powder” and “Sudan red”, this paper analyzes the main academic misconduct and the painful lessons it brings, which is of great warning significance to the students.

Later, Professor Zhang Yongqing also talked about the harm and cause of academic misconduct and what we should do about it. He summed up the dangers of more than a dozen academic misdeeds, it emphasizes that academic misconduct will “cause great waste of academic resources and life”, “destroy the normal academic order, stifle the vitality of innovation” and “intensify the spread of social corruption”. At the same time, Professor Zhang Yongqing also analyzed the causes of academic misconduct. Many cases show that some graduate students are forced to make false statements in order to fulfill the publication target due to the pressure of graduation, and some are utilitarian and lack of professional interest and spirit There are even those who take advantage of the opportunity to punish academic misconduct inadequately, and in the course of scientific research there are speculations and flukes, not realizing that they are digging a hole for themselves, has planted a time bomb or even several bombs in his life. He stressed that postgraduates must have a realistic and practical spirit, an enterprising spirit and a democratic spirit, an open and cooperative spirit, as well as a good sense of integrity and responsibility. Finally, Professor Zhang Yongqing advocates that we should take “advocating scientific ethics, setting up honest style of study, strictly observing discipline and law, carrying forward scientific spirit, abandoning impetuous style of work, abiding by academic norms, developing fair competition and advocating equality and respect” as our common pursuit goal.

The lecture was a great benefit to the new graduate students. The students at the meeting all said that they would stick to scientific ethics in their future study and life, have the courage to innovate, strive to raise the level of academic and scientific research, and take an active part in the cause of academic research, strive to achieve new results and make new contributions in their respective fields of study.
