Dean's Message
USST finds its roots in the founding of the University of Shanghai, also known as Hujiang University in 1906 and the Deutsche Medizinschule für Chinesen in Shanghai (Shanghai German Medical School) in 1907. With a time-honored history of more than a century, USST has passed many milestones and forged important traditions along the way. Since its establishment, USST has produced numerous academic and social luminaries, outstanding scientists and engineers. Inspired by its motto of “Integrity, Righteousness, Diligence, Love, Pondering, Learning, Aspiration, Ambition”, USST continues to build on past achievement and make breakthroughs in the new era through innovation, hard work and open-mindedness.
The Business School of USST traces its history back to the 1930s, when the Downtown School of Commerce of the University of Shanghai was established, and China’s first Systems Engineering Department and Institute founded in the 1970s. In 1979, the School established a partnership with the MIT Sloan School of Management, which marks the first international program between universities in Shanghai after China’s reform and opening up. Two years later, the School started to offer an MBA program taught in English in collaboration with some of the universities and colleges in the United States and Canada, and thus hailed as the pioneer of China’s MBA education by the Wall Street Journal. Today, the USST Business School’s alumni―entrepreneurs, scholars, policymakers―based around the world are working to make the world a better place.
Generations of working staff at the School are dedicated to talent development, academic research, public service, cultural inheritance and innovation. The School now offers an array of programs under four disciplines―management science, economics, science, and engineering―master’s degrees in four first-level disciplines―applied economics, public administration, business administration, and transportation engineering―and doctoral degrees in management science and engineering, and systems science. In 2018, the USST Business School earned AACSB Accreditation, the highest recognition of academic achievements for business schools worldwide. With this recognition, USST became the first local AACSB-Accredited university of its kind in the country. The School is forging ahead to become one of the top advanced business schools in China.
With the aim of distinguishing itself as a world-class business school, the School will continue to live out its core values of “Responsibility, Integration, Innovation and Excellence”, maintain its legacy of holistic thinking, and give full play to its interdisciplinary strengths. Management science and engineering, and systems science will be further enhanced, as well as business administration, applied economics, and public administration. International programs like MBA will be promoted to develop high-achieving, socially responsible innovators with a global vision to serve the nation and the world.
As talents are part of the lifeblood of the School’s teaching and research, we sincerely look forward to working with ambitious minds. We firmly believe that as long as this diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni work shoulder to shoulder, the vision of the School will be turned into reality.
Together we will build a brighter future for the School!
