A Historic Breakthrough in the 17th National Student Transportation Technology Competition

Updated:2022-07-11

The finals of the 17th National University Student Transportation Science and Technology Competition was held online July 9-10. After fierce competition, the two teams from USST, supervised by Dr. Li Wenxiang from Business School, won the second prize and the third prize respectively, the best award our university achieved in this competition, which made a historical breakthrough.

The National University Student Transportation Science and Technology Competition is sponsored by the China Transportation Education Research Association and the Teaching Guidance Committee of transportation majors in colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education. Among all national university students' science and technology competition, this one is the most widely participated and has the greatest impact in the field of transportation in China. It is also an A-level subject competition recognized by our university which has been included in the competition evaluation of the Higher Education Institute. With the theme of Digital Intelligent Transportation, Low-carbon Transportation, this year's competition was organized by Shanghai Maritime University and the Dean's Branch of the Chinese Society of Transportation Education. A total of 1,473 works from 177 universities participated. After the internal selection and recommendation of each participating school and the double-blind online evaluation of the preliminary national round, a total of 213 works from 94 universities were accepted to enter the final round, i.e. the finalist rate was only 14%.

The first round internal selection competition for the 17th National University Student Transportation Science and Technology Competition was held from March 18 to April 22 this year in our university. Students from relevant majors enthusiastically participated in the competition. After the preliminary evaluation, a total of 12 teams from different tracks were recommended to participate in the national competition. Among them, the undergraduate project of the Department of Transportation Systems Engineering at Business School - Carbon Wallet: Precise Transportation Carbon Footprint Measurement and Carbon Inclusion Platform in MaaS Environment (team members: Zhang Yiwen, Yang Zijie, Li Xiaomei, Li Cihang, Tang Shihang) and the graduate project–“The Recognition Algorithm and Its Application of Carbon Emission Reduction for Car-hailing and Ride-Sharing Based on Machine Learning” (team members: Li Yuanyuan, Yu Tianxiang, Cheng Jianan, Chen Siwei, Ouyang Huijie) were selected as the finalists and performed well in the final defense. The team won the second prize and the third prize respectively.

The achievement is the result of the unremitting efforts of the team members, the careful supervising by the instructors from the Department of Transportation Systems Engineering, and the unity and collaboration of the entire Business School. During the preparation period, even though coincided with the most severe period of the COVID-19 epidemic in Shanghai, students insisted on daily online discussions with their instructors through Tencent meetings and WeChat groups while completing their daily courses. With professional insight, instructor Li Wenxiang carefully revised and repeatedly polished the students' works, accumulating more than twenty iterations and updates of their works. In particular, during the preparation for the final round, Associate Professor Liu Weiwei, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation Systems Engineering, organized a pre-defense and counseling session for the students, inviting Associate Professor Dong Jieshang and Associate Professor Wang Jiawen, as well as Dr. Tang Kai, Director of the Shanghai Branch of Institute of Urban and Rural Planning and Design of Zhejiang University, to give suggestions to the students from different dimensions such as innovation, professional knowledge, application value and completion quality. They made suggestions for improvements, which played a key role in winning the award. At the same time, Zhang Zheng, Vice Dean of Business School and Shu Yiming, Director of Academic Affairs took the initiative to encourage and support the students to actively participate in the competition, and helped them solve various difficulties during the epidemic, which provided a solid base for the teams to successfully complete the competition.

The breakthrough achievement of this competition not only enhances the confidence of our students in transportation engineering major to participate in innovation and entrepreneurship, but also fully reflects the effectiveness of the talent cultivation, and lays a good foundation for the future assessment of the discipline and engineering education professional certification of our transportation engineering major.
