On July 2nd, 2023, the 2023 Summer Camp for National Outstanding Undergraduate Students of System Science Discipline of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) was successfully held. Prof. Zhang Zheng, vice dean, Prof. Gao Yan, head of the first-level discipline, Pro. Gu Changgui, director, associate Prof. Liu Yuanhua, secretary of the Party branch, Dr Zheng Yu of the Department of System Science of Business School,and other outstanding undergraduate students participated in the activity, which was hosted by Liu Yuanhua.
Zhang Zheng delivered a speech on behalf of the school at the opening ceremony and provided an in-depth introduction to the university and school’s educational history, current development status, disciplinary and professional characteristics, faculty strength, talent training characteristics, and prospects for further education and employment. In the introduction of the discipline talent training system, Gu Changgui introduced the academic influence, future research direction, and talent training plan of the discipline in detail from the aspects of the discipline institution setting, main research directions, postgraduate training, etc., to help future outstanding students understand the talent training resources and plans provided by the Systems Science Discipline of our school in advance. He described the gratifying achievements of Systems Science graduates in the job market vividly and also highlighted the flexible and diverse incubation programs for scientific research talents in the discipline, including Joined Study of Bachelor and Doctoral Degrees, Joined Study of Master and Doctoral Degrees, Graduates Recommending Exemption, etc.

On July 2nd, 2023, the Summer Camp for National Outstanding Undergraduate Students in Transportation Engineering of USST was successfully held. Associate Prof. Wang Jiawen gave an academic lecture on "Data-driven Urban Road Transportation System Optimization". Wang Jiawen first introduced the development of urban road transportation system data and management strategies with examples and then introduced the data-driven urban transportation management system framework, urban network transportation diagnosis, and optimisation with his research results to help participants understand the research directions related to urban road transportation system and broaden their academic vision.
Associate Prof. Li Wenxiang gave an academic lecture on "Theory and Practice of Low-carbon Transformation of Urban Transportation under the Goal of 'Dual Carbon'". Li Wenxiang first introduced the research background and essence of urban low-carbon transportation and then introduced the theory and practice of urban low-carbon transition from the perspectives of urban transportation carbon emission calculation and evaluation, shared traffic management decision-making and optimisation regulation, and transportation carbon trading mechanism innovation and application based on his research, to help participants understand the sustainable development direction of urban transportation.

The interview for outstanding participants was divided into 3 groups and was conducted simultaneously, with 12 teachers participating. Each participant had 10 minutes to present themselves and ask questions from the interviewers. The interviewers comprehensively assessed the participants from aspects of foreign language listening and speaking, knowledge structure, overall quality, etc., then selected outstanding participants and issued electronic certificates.

On July 7th, 2023, the 2023 Summer Camp for National Outstanding Undergraduate Students of Business Administration of USST was successfully held. The summer camp attracted more than 180 outstanding undergraduate students from more than 60 universities nationwide.
Before the opening ceremony, Ye Chunming, the leader of the Business Administration Discipline, introduced the outstanding alums of the Business School to the students in the hall of the School. Zhang Hao and Chen Xin showed the students around the campus and the school laboratory.

On July 8th, 2023, the Summer camp for National Outstanding Undergraduate Students in Public Management of USST was successfully held in Administration Building. 118 students from 115 universities nationwide applied to participate in the summer camp. After the opening ceremony, Dr Li Nan, an internationally renowned mathematical demographer and former senior technical officer of the United Nations Population Division, and Liu Xinping, associate Prof. of the Department of Public Administration, brought two wonderful academic reports, "A More Realistic Perspective on Population Aging" and "Digital Transformation and Modernization of Urban Governance" to all teachers and students respectively. Li Nan introduced a new population ageing measurement indicator for the widely concerned issue of population ageing--Non-labor-force dependency ratio, NLDR, and made NLDR a differentiated comparison with the traditional Old-age dependency ratio (OADR) for evaluating population ageing. He pointed out that compared to the traditional OADR index, NLDR considered the increase in the labour participation rate, which could more accurately describe and predict the burden of population ageing. Based on the United Nations population forecast data and the Lee-Carter method, he predicted the change of NLDR in G7 countries before 2050 and found that the increase of NLDR was smaller than that of OADR. Because OADR ignored the increase in labour force participation rate, its description of the ageing population of G7 countries in the past was untrue. Predictions were likely to be equally untrue, and understanding the conditions and reasons for the increase in labour force participation can provide valuable insights into population ageing.

Ding Xiaodong emphasised that teacher Li Nan's report provided a very good research perspective for everyone, and attending teachers and students should stand on the shoulders of giants to further improve and develop teacher Li Nan's theory and methods. He pointed out that the numerator and denominator in Dr Li Nan's formula could be adjusted appropriately, and some new analytical factors could be added, which would achieve innovation and development in academic research. He also pointed out that in scientific research, we should strengthen the research of quantitative analysis theory and method, strengthen the cross-integration of System Science with Management Science and other disciplines, establish system thinking, and adhere to the system concept.

In the afternoon, the Department of Public Management organised 3 groups of examiners to interview the selected summer participants and conducted comprehensive understanding and assessments on their foreign language ability, professional competence, academic ability, comprehensive quality, and other aspects.
