On August 11th, 2023, Gu Chunhua, deputy secretary of the USST Party Committee, led a team to Nanjing to participate in the 8th Purple Mountain Forum. Zhao Laijun, dean of the Business School; Gao Yan, head of the Systems Science Discipline; Zhi Luping, discipline secretary; and Li Junxiang, Hu Haisheng and Li Wenxiang, teachers of Business School, attended the forum.
The Purple Mountain academic activities were personally named by academician Xue Yusheng, honorary director of State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd. and distinguished professor of Business School, USST. The aim is to promote academic exchange and competition for developing energy and power technology in big energy. Since 2015, more than 90 events have been held, developing into an international, high-level professional academic brand with industry characteristics, and included in the annual International Top-level Forum on Engineering Science and Technology Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Academician Xue Yusheng gave a keynote speech titled "A research framework for mechanisms of emergence phenomena - the whole reductionism thinking based on integrating models with trajectories". The report summarised the theory of holistic reductionism that elevated linear reduction theory to nonlinear holistic reduction and decoupled the process of studying ontology systems into two parts: The first is to establish or modify simulation models to replace objectively existing ontology systems based on observation and conjecture; The second is to analyse the spatiotemporal mechanism of the model's evolutionary behaviour.
Gu Chunhua presided over the special conference on systems science titled "Round Table Conference: Support of Systems Science for High-Quality Development". The conference focused on Academician Xue Yusheng's thematic report and invited Academician Zhang Yi from the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Academician Chen Zhe from the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences, Hou Ruoshi and Zhou Xuelian from Tsinghua University, Zhai Kun from Peking University, Liu Zhiqin from Renmin University of China, Han Zhangang from Beijing Normal University, and Duan Xiaojun from the University of National Defense Science and Technology, eleven scholars including Zhao Laijun and Gao Yan from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and Wang He from Southeast University, gave keynote speeches. Gu Chunhua commented on each guest's speech one by one.
Zhao Laijun, Gao Yan, and teacher representatives subsequently participated in the main forum and a series of special seminars of the 8th Purple Mountain Forum with the theme "Energy Transition and Security for Carbon Peak and Neutrality Goals" starting from the 12th.
This conference fully demonstrates the important influence of USST in the field of Systems science in China.
