Business School Held the Opening Ceremony of Graduate Students Enrolled in 2023

On the afternoon of September 4th, Business School held the opening ceremony of graduate students enrolled in 2023 in the first conference room. Accompanied by the autumn breeze, 356 new doctoral and master students from all over the country gathered together, to start a new chapter in their life. Secretary of the USSTBS Party Committee Ma Jingbo, dean Zhao Laijun, deputy dean Zhang Zheng, deputy secretary of the USSTBS Party Committee Pu Yingying, and Liu Qinming, director of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Business School, attended the ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Pu Yingying.

Ma Jingbo combined USST’s red education culture and expressed three earnest hopes for 2023 graduate students: firstly, he emphasized the importance of having lofty aspirations and actively serving the country. As a graduate student, one should aim to cultivate noble moral character, create achievements that are beneficial to the country, people, and society, realize the organic unity of personal and social values, and share a common fate with the development of the country and nation. Secondly, he highlighted the significance of inheriting the past and present, and carrying forward the culture of USST. Graduate students should make use of USST’s red historical resources, long-standing educational history, and traditions, and integrate them with learning and scientific research to make innovations. Thirdly, he encouraged graduate students to value time and strive to achieve the unity of knowledge and action. Only when the roots are deep can the leaves flourish. Graduate students need to consolidate their scientific research foundation, cultivate excellent skills and extraordinary abilities through continuous learning and practice, and apply their achievements to the great practice of building a modern and powerful country.

Zhao Laijun introduced the historical evolution of USST to all of the new graduate students, focusing on its development process, disciplinary structure, internationalization progress, scientific research achievements, and construction goals of the Business School. He encouraged students to adapt to new environments and identities as soon as possible, set new goals and plans, and cherish the extraordinary years of graduate study. He also urged them to learn happily, grow healthily, and strive to become aspiring young people with all-around development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics, and labor education.

Liu Qinming, representative of the graduate supervisor and director of the Industrial Engineering Department, shared his experience and feelings with new graduate students. Firstly, he emphasized the importance of perseverance, resilience, and the ability to withstand setbacks in the face of long-term scientific research exploration and accumulation; secondly, it is necessary to train the spirit of independent thinking and to communicate actively; finally, he encouraged students to be open-minded and strive to constantly learn and improve themselves.

The representative of the senior graduate student, Li Bei, a master student in Systems Science enrolled in 2021, shared her learning journey with the new students from three aspects: setting learning goals, maintaining research enthusiasm, and being good at discovering beauty.

At last, the leaders and supervisor representatives wore the USST emblems for graduate students, marking the start of their new chapter for being USSTers in the beautiful Hujiang Park.

After the opening ceremony, Business School also invited the police officer Huang Tongyang from the Cultural Security Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau to give a lecture on anti-fraud measures. Additionally, full-time organizers of the USSTBS Party committee, graduate student counselors, and staff from the laboratory and graduate academic affairs office conducted orientation education on graduates’ Party building work, student affairs, ideological and political work, campus and laboratory safety, graduate student cultivation and degree work.
