Updated:2024-11-11

During November 4 to November 10, Wei Jingfu, Director of the Professional Degree Education Center (PDEC) of the BS, and Ma Yan, Senior Admissions Supervisor, led a study tour to the National University of Singapore (NUS). With the theme of “Innovation and Entrepreneurship”, the visit aimed to broaden students' international vision and enhance their innovation and entrepreneurship ability.

On November 4, the PDEC of the BS visiting group arrived at NUS and started the overseas visiting program. Prof. Cai Jiaxin, dean of the College of Design and Engineering of NUS, warmly welcomed the faculty and students of USST and had an in-depth exchange of views with Wei Jingfu on the topics of course arrangement, study life and future cooperation. Both sides exchanged gifts and expressed their desire for friendly cooperation.

In the class of “Concepts and Practices of Innovation”, Annapoornima M. Subramanian, Associate Professor of NUS, analyzed the multidimensional nature of innovation, explained the types of innovations such as product and process optimization, and emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork, equal communication, and the respect and screening of ideas for the success of innovation. Through the in-depth analysis of the logic of business models, the audience gained a clearer understanding of the whole picture of business activities and the dimensions of innovation.

In the class of “Entrepreneurship and Start-ups”, Associate Professor Yu Wei guided students to think about the motivation of entrepreneurship, introduced the interesting topic of whether entrepreneurs are born or made, and analyzed in detail the traits and success factors that entrepreneurs should have, such as risk-taking, continuous innovation, and attention to details, with Steve Jobs as an example. Through the “Big Five Personality Model”, students were helped to examine the entrepreneurial behavior from the dimension of personality. After in-depth analysis of the role of the “Dark Triangle” personality traits in the entrepreneurial process, it was pointed out that the dark traits could be the catalyst for career success in some cases. Finally, the professor provided valuable guidance on the causes of entrepreneurial failures and assessment methods to avoid the potential risks.

In addition to the exciting academic coursework, the visiting group also visited a number of well-known companies and innovative organizations. At the O2Work economical-shared office space, students were attracted by its unique design concept - incorporating the natural beauty of the grasslands and health benefits into the office environment, creating a comfortable and creative working atmosphere. Mr. Li Ruiwu, president of the Singapore Guangdong Chamber of Commerce and founder of O2Work, shared his entrepreneurial journey with the audience. He emphasized the importance of details and encouraged students to pay attention to key factors such as human logic, market positioning and knowledge logic in the process of entrepreneurship, to apply what they have learned in practice, and to keep trying, reflecting and summarizing.

At the Singapore-Sino Science and Technology Industry Innovation Center, the students gained an in-depth understanding of the center's efforts in promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. Relying on the synergistic cooperation with the world's top universities and research institutes, the Center is committed to integrating resources in cutting-edge fields such as information technology, biomedicine, new energy and so on. Faculty and students listened to the Center's staff share their views on offshore finance, the transformation of global financial hubs, and the construction of the Financial Management Center, further recognizing the importance of innovative practices.

At the graduation ceremony, Associate Professor Yu Wei and Professor Wei Jingfu, jointly presented graduation certificates to each student. This certificate carries their efforts and gains during this period of time, and it is believed that in the future, they will continue to move forward and excel, so that the pursuit of excellence will become the bottom of the struggle for life.

This NUS study tour allowed faculty and students to experience the unique charm of Singapore, the Lion City. Additionally, the visit injected fresh momentum into the further collaboration between the USST and the NUS.
