Professor Cao Xinyu from University of Minnesota Delivered Invited Lecture at USSTBS

On the morning of June 11, Professor Cao Xinyu, Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part D (a top international journal in the transportation field), and professor at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs of University of Minnesota, delivered a lecture. The lecture, titled “How to Write Internationally Peer-Reviewed Papers,” was presided over by Yao Jiao, Party Secretary of the Department of Transportation System Engineering, and attended by nearly one hundred faculty members and students from related disciplines. The lecture was at the invitation of Associate Professor Li Wenxiang from the Department of Transportation System Engineering. 

Professor Cao Xinyu, drawing on his extensive experience, systematically elaborated on the key elements of writing and reviewing papers for international publications. He emphasized the following points: (1)Title: Should be concise yet precise, directly capturing the core of the research; (2) Keywords: Must cover primary research directions and key insights; (3) Abstract: Should be structured into four parts—background, methodology, findings, and significance—providing a succinct yet comprehensive overview;(4) Literature Review: Should go beyond mere summarization, it must critically analyze existing research, identify gaps, and establish the study’s foundation; (5) Discussion & Conclusion: Should not only summarize findings but also openly acknowledge limitations and suggest future research directions. Regarding academic integrity, Professor Cao illustrated proper citation practices with real-world examples and reiterated that plagiarism in any form is unacceptable. The lecture was rich in practical insights, and provided valuable guidance for faculty members and students.

During the lecture, Professor Cao Xinyu engaged in discussions with faculty and students, guiding them to reflect on details and techniques. After the session, they discussed topics such as AI-assisted editing and journal topic selection. The participants expressed great satisfaction and acknowledged substantial gains from the event.

This lecture not only provided an opportunity for the faculty and students to communicate with world renowned scholars, but also offered them invaluable experience and guidance. This significantly enhanced their academic research capabilities and broadened their international perspectives.
