On July 9, three disciplines of System Science (Science), Management Science and Engineering (Management) and System Engineering (Engineering) of the Business School of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology(USST) jointly held the summer camp for national outstanding students. More than 100 students from more than 70 universities in China participated in this summer camp after the selection process.
Prof. Gao Yan (doctoral supervisor), first-level discipline doctoral site supervisor and post-doc station director of System Science”, Prof. Ma Liang (doctoral supervisor), first-level discipline doctoral site supervisor and post-doc station director of Management Science and Engineering”, Prof. Gu Changgui (doctoral supervisor), head of the Department of System Science, Prof. Fan Chongjun (doctoral supervisor), head of the Department of Information Management and Information Systems, and Prof. Geng Xiuli (doctoral supervisor), secretary of the Party Branch and deputy head of the Department of Industrial Engineering, attended the camp and gave presentations on the history and status of the discipline/profession. The whole summer camp was presided over by Associate Professor Zhao Jinghua, a representative of the instructors, who welcomed all the campers and read out the agenda on behalf of the three disciplines.
Professor Gao Yan explained in depth the process and development of the discipline of system science with Chinese characteristics at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, emphasizing that system science has entered a new stage of complexity science, leading the campers to appreciate the unique charm of system science, and introducing the academic influence, future development and talent training programs of the discipline from various aspects such as institutional settings, main research directions and graduate training. The students left messages in the cloud, expressing their strong interest in system science.
Professor Ma Liang gave a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the historical development of the two disciplines of Management Science and Engineering and Systems Engineering of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, the evolution of the institute's institutions, faculty strength, research directions, postgraduate training programs, and many other aspects. The participants interacted enthusiastically in the cloud and expressed their longing for the century-old university and its disciplines.
Prof. Gu Changgui introduced the undergraduate program of the Department of System Science, the specialties, faculty members and outstanding graduates, and vividly described the promising achievements of System Science graduates in the job market, as well as the flexible and diversified research talent incubation programs, including Joined Study of Bachelor and Doctoral Degree, and Joined Study of Master and Doctoral Degree. The campers also actively interacted with each other online and expressed their desire to pursue further studies in System Science at USST in the future.
Prof. Fan Chongjun and Prof. Geng Xiuli each gave a comprehensive introduction to all campers about the professional characteristics and advantages of the Department of Information Management and Information Systems and the Department of Industrial Engineering, the faculty and the personnel training program.
In the final discussion session, moderator Zhao Jinghua and the heads of each discipline/major at the venue gave answers to the questions raised by the students online about the concerns of graduate school, graduate school exemption, review mechanism, mentor selection and so on. The participants spoke and asked questions enthusiastically, and the interaction and communication between teachers and students were warm. At around 4:00 p.m., the whole summer camp activity came to an end and was a complete success.
